In 2015, Indiana farmer Dean Gangwer faced a unique emergency when he found a newborn calf, Leroy, freezing in the snow. The calf had been born unexpectedly during the night and was at risk of hypothermia. In a moment of quick thinking, Dean used his hot tub as an improvised rescue tool, placing the calf in the warm water to raise its body temperature. Dean, fully clothed, stayed in the tub with Leroy for an hour to ensure the calf stayed safe and didn’t drown. After the warming bath, Leroy was wrapped in blankets to further stabilize. The calf eventually recovered and was able to rejoin the herd. Dean humorously remarked that Leroy’s hot-tub days were over, though he might enjoy some sunbathing in the future.
