Switzerland is set to introduce the suicide pod, a new form of assisted suicide that doesn’t require medical supervision. The device, designed by Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International, aims to offer a peaceful passing for individuals with terminal illnesses or low quality of life. The pod works by lowering the oxygen level inside to 0.05%, replacing it with nitrogen, which leads to unconsciousness and death within about five minutes. Once the person inside presses a button to initiate the process, there is no turning back.
While the concept has sparked controversy, Nitschke believes the suicide pod could provide a dignified option for those seeking to end their lives. However, details about the first use of the pod, including the identity of the person involved, remain private to avoid media attention. Footage from inside the pod is shared with the coroner after use.
