Kym Beechey, an Australian nature enthusiast, enjoys spending her days outdoors, appreciating the beauty of the natural world. One day, while walking through the forest, she spotted what she thought was a baby tawny frogmouth—an owl-like bird. Excited by the discovery, she quickly pulled out her phone to capture the moment with a photo.
However, when Kym zoomed in on the image, she realized that the “bird” was not a bird at all. It was a banksia pod, a unique and often amusing-looking seed pod that grows on banksia trees. These trees are primarily found in southwestern Australia, but also in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The pods are often compared to pine cones and are known for their striking appearance.
Banksia pods can remain closed for long periods but burst open in the heat of a forest fire to release their seeds. Laughing at her mistake, Kym decided to share her photo with others, showing how easily nature can trick the eye.
