A tragic image has gone viral, showing two grandparents and their 7-year-old grandson, Micah, stuck on a rooftop in North Carolina as floodwaters from Hurricane Helene surged. The family, including Megan Drye, her elderly parents, and Micah, had sought refuge on the roof of their Asheville home as floodwaters rose. Desperate for help, Megan’s sister, Jessica Drye Turner, shared a photo on Facebook of the family huddled on the roof, covered in blankets, watching debris float by.
Sadly, the roof collapsed shortly after the photos were taken, and the floodwaters swept away Megan’s parents and young Micah. Megan survived, though deeply traumatized by the loss. Her aunt, Jessica, shared her emotional grief online, and later confirmed Megan had been found alive. Tragically, Micah’s body was recovered half a mile away.
In the aftermath, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $66,000 for Megan. The Drye family’s heartbreaking story is one among many following Hurricane Helene, which has claimed over 130 lives and left many others missing or displaced.
