In 2014, a homeowner in Winchester, Hampshire, UK, discovered a massive wasp nest in her spare room, estimated to house around 5,000 wasps. The nest, which measured nearly a meter wide and 30 cm deep, had been built over a sentimental comforter. Pest controller John Birkett, with 45 years of experience, was called in to handle the situation. Upon attempting to remove the comforter, an “explosion” of wasps emerged. Birkett, carefully dressed in protective gear, managed to control the nest in about an hour. He found that the wasps had chewed through the bed and mattress. While Birkett described the nest as a “wonderful piece of art,” he acknowledged the necessity of removing the pests. Despite his mixed feelings about killing the wasps, he successfully dismantled the nest, preventing further infestation. This unusual case stands out in his long career as one of the most extraordinary encounters with wasps he had ever faced.
