For most parents, seeing their baby’s first smile is a heartwarming milestone that comes months after birth. But for Australia’s Cristina Vercher and her husband Blaize Mucha, their daughter, Ayla Summer Mucha, was born with a permanent smile—a condition they never expected.
Born on December 30, 2021, via C-section, Ayla’s condition was immediately apparent. Doctors diagnosed her with bilateral macrostomia, a rare facial cleft that prevents the corners of the mouth from fusing during pregnancy. With only 14 documented cases in medical literature, the condition left both the parents and doctors stunned.
The parents were initially worried and overwhelmed, especially since Ayla’s condition hadn’t shown up on ultrasounds. Cristina shared: “It came as a huge shock. All I could think about was where I went wrong.” However, doctors assured them there was nothing they could have done differently.
Though Ayla’s condition caused challenges, including difficulties nursing, her parents focused on supporting her. Despite facing online negativity, many rallied behind them, celebrating Ayla’s beauty. Now two years old, Ayla continues to charm the world, her smile reminding everyone of the unique beauty in differences.
