Joe DiMeo, the first person to successfully undergo a face and double hand transplant, recently shared details about the horrific car crash that led to his life-changing surgery. In July 2018, while driving home after a night shift, Joe fell asleep at the wheel, causing his Dodge Challenger to crash, flip over, and catch fire. He suffered burns over 80% of his body, lost his fingertips, and had damaged eyelids. Following the crash, Joe endured a difficult recovery, including relearning basic motor functions, and experienced the loss of many friends, gaining a deeper appreciation for true relationships.
In August 2020, Joe underwent a 23-hour transplant surgery in New York, giving him a new face and hands. He was deeply grateful for the transplant, as he felt he couldn’t live with his injuries. Since then, he has reached significant milestones, including finding love with Jessica Koby, whom he got engaged to recently. They bonded over their shared love for dogs, and both are excited about their upcoming wedding.
