Hungary gives injury update on Barnabas Varga after sickening collision during Euro 2024 game

Striker Barnabas Varga was knocked unconscious during his team’s clash against Scotland

Scotland’s dreams of securing a place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 were dashed by a dramatic late goal from Kevin Csoboth in the 10th minute of stoppage time. However, the celebratory mood for Hungary was dampened by the incident involving Varga.

At the 69-minute mark, play was halted after Varga collided with Gunn, who had rushed out of Scotland’s net to punch the ball away.

The Hungarian star was left on the ground as blankets were held up to shield him from the cameras, while players formed a protective wall around him.

After the match, the first update on Varga’s condition was released.

Journalist Ben Jacobs wrote on social media: “The Hungarian Football Federation confirm Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable and he has been taken to hospital in Stuttgart.”

After the winning goal was scored, Hungary players held up Varga’s shirt to show support to their teammate.

Shortly afterwards, the Hungarian Football Association released a statement saying: “Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable!

“The player of Ferencvaros is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status!”

It later announced that Varga broken ‘several bones’ in his face as a result of the collision as well as suffering from a concussion.

It added: “The striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him!”

Left-back Milos Kerkez also later provided another update on his teammate’s health by taking to Instagram.

The Bournemouth star wrote: “Proud of everyone and thankful for the support in the stadium and the country! Our brother will be alright because he is strong.”

Right winger Roland Sallai, who was awarded man of the match, said it was ‘terrible’ seeing Varga suffer.

He said of the incident: “It was a terrible moment to see him like that. He’ll have to go through a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return.
