Kate Kaufling, a beloved sophomore nursing student at the University of Kentucky, passed away on March 31, 2024, at the age of 20 after a brave battle with osteosarcoma. Born in 2003, Kate was deeply involved in campus life, participating in the school dance team and the Tri Delta sorority. Her twin sister, Abbey, who also danced on the team, shared her heartache on Instagram, saying, “My sweet Kate, you were my person.”
Kate was diagnosed with bone cancer in June 2023, yet she continued to focus on her education. Sandy Bell, the university’s executive associate athletics director, praised Kate’s commitment to her studies, noting, “She was not only a great dancer but also a dedicated student in the College of Nursing.” Dawn Walters, the head dance coach, reflected on Kate’s joyful spirit, saying, “Her smile could light up a room.”
Kate’s passing has left a profound impact on her family—her parents, Holly and Steve, and her twin sister Abbey—as well as the university community, where her memory will live on.
