A Marine Corps investigation has determined that pilot error was the primary cause of an F-35B fighter jet crash in South Carolina last year. The incident occurred on September 17, 2023, when the pilot ejected from the aircraft due to electrical malfunctions and disorientation during a heavy rainstorm, believing he was facing an uncontrollable flight emergency. However, the investigation revealed that the aircraft continued to fly unmanned for over 11 minutes, covering approximately 60 miles before crashing.Military officials cited several contributing factors, including the jet’s advanced stealth technology and a malfunctioning transponder, which hindered search efforts for more than 24 hours. The pilot’s helmet display flickered multiple times during the approach to Joint Base Charleston, leading to confusion about the aircraft’s status. Ultimately, the wreckage was located in a rural area near Hemmingway, SC. The investigation concluded that the pilot’s decision to eject was unnecessary, as the F-35 was still capable of controlled flight at the time.
