
Matilde Lorenzi, a 19-year-old rising star in Italian downhill skiing, tragically died after a fall during a training session on October 29, 2024. The accident occurred on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales, where she suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano. Despite medical efforts, Lorenzi succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning.The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) expressed profound sorrow over her death, stating that it has left the skiing community heartbroken. Lorenzi was a member of the Italian Army sports division and had recently achieved significant success, including winning the national Super-G title. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from prominent figures, including Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin, who shared their grief on social media.
