Prince William caught off-guard by veteran with question about Kate Middleton – whether she “is getting any better”

Prince William found himself compelled to respond personally to a question about his wife, Kate Middleton, when a veteran he was meeting left him no choice.

During an event in Portsmouth, England, commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Prince William, along with his father, King Charles III, and Queen Camilla, was in attendance. Princess Kate was notably absent from the engagement, having been out of the public eye since the end of December.

Recent revelations have disclosed that she has been undergoing cancer treatment, which has kept her away from her official duties.

In a video posted on Twitter, The Prince of Wales is seen being asked a question by a veteran in a wheelchair. The veteran inquired whether Kate “is getting any better.”

William immediately responded, “Yes, she’d love to be here today.”

The Prince then took a moment to share that Kate’s grandmother had military service of her own. He said, “I was reminding everyone her grandmother served at Bletchley Park.” He added, “So she had quite a bit in common with some of the ladies here who were at Bletchley.”

In March 2024, after months of not being seen in public, Kate Middleton shared a video on social media announcing her cancer diagnosis.

Prince William’s outing for the 80th anniversary of D-Day was planned ahead of the family’s annual Trooping the Colour military event in June. Kate Middleton, who was appointed the Colonel of the Irish Guards in 2022, is said to not be performing the Colonel’s Review this year.

According to a source, Kate Middleton will not return to the public eye or her official duties until her doctors clear her, with no indication of when that might be.

“Princess Kate is still focusing on her recovery but has been spotted running errands with her family,” the source shared. “Her priority remains on her young children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. She is being fully supported by Prince William, who has been devoted to her recuperation. Her mother and siblings have also been dedicated to her recovery, and other family members have stepped in to support her young family.”

Though she is being kept updated with her patronages, she is not yet ready to resume her duties.

“While Kate was ‘kept up to date’ on the release of the Royal Foundation Business Task Force for Early Childhood report, which was released last week, there is no indication she is returning to work imminently,” the source said. “She will only return to work when her medical team gives the go-ahead.”
