A banana duct-taped to a wall, a provocative artwork by Italian visual artist Maurizio Cattelan, has sold for an astonishing $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The piece, titled Comedian, surpassed pre-sale estimates by four times, with Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun emerging as the highest bidder.
Originally purchased for just $0.35, the banana installation sparked a global debate when it was first revealed in 2019, becoming a viral sensation. The artwork, which has traveled worldwide, came with instructions for replacing the banana once it rots. In fact, the fruit has already been eaten twice as part of the ongoing artistic experience.
Mr. Sun, who acquired the unique piece, expressed plans to personally eat the banana in a continuation of the performance. This sale has further fueled the conversation around what constitutes art and its value in the modern age, as Comedian challenges traditional notions with its unconventional medium.
