Graduation day is always a moment of pride, but for Jessica and Keelin Van Wagenen, it was even more special because they achieved the milestone together. The mother-daughter duo made history as they graduated from East Carolina University’s registered nurse program in the same class. The university noted that such an achievement was unprecedented.
Jessica, a former marine who put her aspirations on hold to raise her daughters, resumed her education alongside her daughter, Keelin, who was also pursuing her nursing career. Jessica shared that she had chosen to prioritize stability for her children over her own ambitions, but now, both women were able to achieve their dreams together.
Keelin expressed immense pride in her mother for never giving up on her goals. “I’m proud of her every day,” she said. Today, Keelin works as a pediatric nurse at ECU Health, while Jessica serves as an operating room nurse for Carteret Healthcare.
For both women, the memories of attending nursing school together will remain a cherished bond. Their inspiring story serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
