If you see a man with one painted fingernail, it’s more than just a fashion statement—it’s a powerful symbol of support for ending child sexual abuse. The movement, called #PolishedMan, was inspired by a deeply emotional encounter in Cambodia between Elliot Costello and a young girl named Thea.
During their meeting, Thea, who had been a victim of sexual assault, painted one of Elliot’s nails. In response, he promised to keep it painted as a way to remember her and raise awareness of the issue. This moment inspired Elliot to create the #PolishedMan campaign, encouraging men to paint one fingernail to represent the one in five children who will experience sexual assault.
The painted nail serves as a conversation starter about child abuse, aiming to challenge violent behaviors and language, and to raise funds for educational programs and resources to help survivors. Men, who are responsible for 96% of such violence, are urged to take the lead in this critical fight against abuse.
