While the $2 bill has long been seen as an unlucky or rare currency, it may surprise you to learn that it could be worth much more than its face value.
Historically, $2 bills were avoided due to superstitions, with people even tearing the corners off to “remove the curse.” However, these bills have gained some attention for their rarity. According to the Federal Reserve, over 1.6 billion $2 bills were in circulation in 2023, a notable increase from the past.
Some of the oldest $2 bills, especially those from 1862 to 1896, can be worth thousands, particularly those with red, brown, or blue seals. Uncirculated bills from these periods can fetch up to $5,000, while older, circulated bills may still bring in around $1,100. Additionally, certain bills from the 1917-1928 period can range from $50 to $1,000, depending on condition. For particularly rare notes with “fancy serial numbers,” the value can skyrocket to $6,000.
If you happen to have one of these rare bills, it might just be time to check their worth!
