In the journal, her son detailed plans to carry out a mass shooting at his high school, including killing his mother and her boyfriend. The note was chillingly specific, outlining the day, time, and intended victims.
Schubert’s decision sparked national conversations about parental responsibility and the importance of early intervention to prevent school violence. “As a parent, your first instinct is to protect your child,” Schubert said. “But at that moment, I thought he’d be safer in jail if he was planning to do those things.”
Her courageous act likely prevented a tragedy. Her son was arrested, charged with harassment-domestic violence and making threats, and ordered to undergo mental health treatment along with 18 months of community control. Since then, he has received help for depression, graduated high school, and plans to attend college.
