President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for border czar, Tom Homan, has pledged to crack down on sanctuary cities, starting January 21st in Chicago. During a GOP event, Homan issued a stern warning to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, vowing prosecution if the mayor obstructs federal immigration enforcement. “If your mayor knowingly harbors or conceals an illegal alien, I will prosecute him,” Homan declared, also criticizing Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
Homan emphasized that ICE agents will target criminals and gang members, regardless of local resistance. Governor Pritzker dismissed the comments as “baseless attacks,” stating his focus is on governing with “competence instead of chaos.”
Homan’s remarks echo his broader mission to enforce federal immigration laws. Responding to sanctuary city leaders like Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Homan cited federal statutes penalizing those who impede immigration enforcement. “If you don’t want to help, get out of the way,” he said, promising legal consequences for obstruction.
Homan remains firm in his commitment to uphold immigration laws, despite opposition from Democratic officials, stating, “We’re going to enforce the law, period.”
