he $2 Bill: From Unlucky to Potential Treasure
Once considered unlucky, the $2 bill now holds unexpected value for collectors. While some Americans still view it as rare or obsolete, the Federal Reserve reported 1.6 billion $2 bills in circulation in 2023, a small fraction compared to $1 and $20 notes.
First issued in 1862, the $2 bill originally featured Alexander Hamilton. By 1869, Thomas Jefferson’s portrait replaced Hamilton, with Monticello appearing on the back. In later designs, the signing of the Declaration of Independence became a prominent image.
Though most $2 bills remain worth face value, certain editions can fetch thousands. Bills printed between 1862 and 1896 with red, brown, or blue seals can be worth up to $5,000 if uncirculated, and $1,100 even if used. Notes from 1917 to 1928 with red or blue seals may sell for $50 to $1,000. Collectors also prize bills with rare serial numbers, pushing their value as high as $6,000.
If you’re lucky enough to hold a rare $2 bill, it might just be worth a small fortune! Share this story and check your wallet—you could be holding hidden treasure.
