As Halloween approached, Kevin, 11, noticed that his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Kimbly, hadn’t decorated her house. Unlike the festive neighborhood, her home was plain and lifeless. Wanting to help, Kevin offered to decorate, but Mrs. Kimbly, upset, said she hated Halloween and asked him to leave her alone.
Kevin was sad but determined. Ignoring his mom’s advice to respect her wishes, he gathered decorations and carved a pumpkin. While placing them outside her house, Mrs. Kimbly angrily smashed his Jack O’Lantern. Ashamed, Kevin ran home in tears—not because he was scolded but because Mrs. Kimbly would be alone that night.
Still, Kevin didn’t give up. Dressed as a vampire, he sat on her porch, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, telling them Mrs. Kimbly wasn’t home. Moments later, she opened the door. To his surprise, she smiled and invited him back.
Mrs. Kimbly tearfully shared that Halloween made her lonely, as she had no children or grandchildren. Kevin’s act of kindness warmed her heart, and for the first time in years, she felt the joy of the holiday.
