The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the first severe case of avian influenza A(H5N1) linked to a backyard flock in the US. A patient in Louisiana, hospitalized on December 13, 2024, tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu after contact with sick and deceased birds in backyard flocks. An investigation is ongoing to trace the infection’s source. Previously, there were 37 cases tied to dairy herds, 21 to poultry farms and culling operations, and 2 cases with unknown exposure sources. This marks a significant milestone in understanding H5N1 bird flu transmission in the US.
