Mother’s Determination Saves Son from Tick-Borne Disease
Danielle was convinced her son Mason had Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a tick-borne illness less known than Lyme disease or TBE. Despite initial doubts, her persistence led to a life-saving diagnosis.

RMSF symptoms, including fever, headache, and rash, matched Mason’s condition. This infection, caused by tick bites, is found across the U.S. and beyond, despite its name suggesting a link to mountain regions. Unlike more familiar tick-borne illnesses, RMSF often goes undiagnosed, which can be fatal without the proper antibiotic treatment.

Danielle’s advocacy underscores the importance of parental intuition. “If I hadn’t done my research and pushed for answers, Mason’s outcome could have been very different,” she said.
Children often display atypical symptoms, making diagnosis more challenging. In a similar case, a 2-year-old girl tragically died in 2017 due to misdiagnosis.
Mason is now fully recovered, and Danielle is raising awareness about RMSF. She urges parents to trust their instincts: “Doctors are human—they don’t know everything. Be your child’s advocate.”

Her story highlights the critical role of persistence in protecting loved ones from serious health threats.
