Unwelcome Guests: Creatures in Your Toilet
In the summer of 2023, Arizona resident Michelle Lespron came home to a chilling sight: a four-foot snake coiled in her toilet. Thankfully, the lid was closed. A wildlife professional removed the snake, capturing its hissing protests on camera.
Snakes, seeking cool, dark, and wet places, often find their way into toilets while chasing food in the sewers. Although most are non-venomous, such incidents are terrifying. But snakes aren’t the only culprits—rats, spiders, lizards, and even marsupials have made unexpected appearances. Rats, natural swimmers, can navigate drainpipes, while iguanas in warmer regions might climb through vent stacks. In rare cases, possums have also been found splashing in toilets.
To prevent such surprises, keep bathrooms clean and dry, seal any wall openings, and ensure vent stacks are covered. Always inspect before sitting and keep the lid down. If you encounter a critter, call a professional to safely remove it.
