The rodeo community is mourning the loss of Ace Patton Ashford, an 18-year-old roper from Lott, Texas. Ashford tragically passed away on August 12 from injuries sustained in a horse-related accident.
According to the Lott Volunteer Fire Department, Ashford was tending to a sick calf when the horse he was working with became agitated. His leg became tangled, and he was dragged across an open field. Despite being airlifted to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries later that morning.
Ashford’s family confirmed his passing, remembering him as a passionate rodeo competitor. Known as the “Header” in Team Roping, Ashford dedicated countless hours to honing his craft. A recent high school graduate, he was preparing to join the Hill College Rodeo Team on a scholarship.
The Team Roping Journal described Ashford as an “old soul” who left too soon. Fellow roper Cody Snow called him “pure gold.”
He is survived by his parents, siblings, and girlfriend. His family cherishes the memories of his kindness and love, which touched all who knew him.
