World’s Oldest Mom Gave Birth to Twin Boys at 66, Called Selfish by Her Family
Motherhood is a unique and life-changing journey. For Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara of Cadiz, Spain, it came later than most—at 66 years old.
In 2006, Maria gave birth to twin boys, Christian and Pau, becoming the world’s oldest mother. She had sold her home to fund IVF treatments and reportedly misled doctors about her age, claiming to be 55. Her decision to have children at such an advanced age drew criticism, even from her own family, who labeled her selfish.
Maria defended her choice, saying: “Everyone should decide when to start a family, free from societal pressure.” Tragically, six months after giving birth, Maria was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She passed away in 2009, leaving her young sons to be raised by her family.
Despite the controversy, Maria’s brother, Ricardo, expressed love for the boys, stating: “Now they are here. We love these beautiful boys.”
Today, Christian and Pau are thriving under their family’s care. Maria’s story remains a testament to the complexities of choice, family, and the enduring love of a mother.
