In February 2017, Ashad Russell, a passerby with a concealed carry permit, was cleared of any wrongdoing after intervening in an attack on Florida Deputy Dean Bardes. The incident unfolded on Interstate 75, where Russell witnessed the deputy being assaulted. Acting on the deputy’s instructions, Russell used his firearm to protect the officer.
The State Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and concluded that Russell’s actions were justified. Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott commended Russell for his quick response, though the brother of the assailant, Edward Strother, expressed disagreement with the decision.
The case was subsequently closed without further action, highlighting a dramatic and contentious moment in the ongoing conversation about civilian intervention and self-defense laws.
