Hailey stepped off the plane, basking in the sun’s warmth. A peaceful vacation was exactly what she needed to escape her chaotic life. After unpacking, she strolled to the local grocery store to stock up.
Turning a corner, she froze. A man stood a few feet away, his profile hauntingly familiar—her late husband, George. It couldn’t be him. George had died in a plane crash, leaving her grieving and penniless after their joint savings mysteriously vanished.
Beside the man stood Martha, George’s mother. Hailey’s pulse quickened. She hesitated, then stepped closer, unable to ignore the resemblance. “George?” she whispered.
The man turned, and her breath caught. It was his face—the same face she’d loved and mourned. Panic flashed in his eyes as Hailey called louder, “George!” He grabbed Martha’s arm, trying to leave, but Hailey intercepted them.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” she said, voice trembling.
George avoided her gaze. “I can explain—just not here.”
“Explain how you faked your death and stole my money?” she snapped.
Reluctantly, George nodded, leading her to his car. Questions raced in Hailey’s mind. She wasn’t leaving without answers.
