Brady Bunch Star Gave Crew A Little Extra

If you grew up in the 1970s, “The Brady Bunch” was essential TV, offering a peek into the lives of the blended Brady family as they navigated suburban life’s ups and downs. Despite its short five-season run, the show has made an enduring mark on pop culture, spawning numerous spin-offs and TV movies. However, beyond the screen, there are intriguing behind-the-scenes facts that even dedicated fans may not know. Let’s explore the secrets and trivia of “The Brady Bunch.”

Casting Quirks and Adjustments

Originally, “The Brady Bunch” was meant to feature three girls and three boys. However, during casting, only five of the six children were chosen. To balance the cast, producers decided to add a fourth girl, Jan, into the mix.

Set Rules and Early Bedtimes

To ensure the young actors were well-rested for filming, strict bedtimes were enforced on set. The girls had to be in bed by 9 pm, while the boys had until 10 pm. Another famous rule on set was “no running in the house,” aimed at minimizing noise disruptions during filming.

The Real Alice

Alice, the Brady family’s beloved housekeeper, was portrayed by Ann B. Davis, who in real life was a registered nurse. Her catchphrase “Oh, Mike!” became iconic within the show.

Bobby’s Stairway Trick and Set Illusions

In the memorable opening credits, all six Brady children are seen descending the stairs for a family picture. However, young Bobby (played by Mike Lookinland) was too small to manage the stairs independently. Crew members had to carry him down and digitally insert him into the scene later. Additionally, to create the illusion of a larger house, tricks like widening doorways and raising ceilings were employed.

Cast Dynamics and Unfortunate Incidents

Despite their on-screen chemistry, tensions occasionally arose among the cast. For instance, during a pool scene, Susan Olsen (who played Cindy) was nearly submerged after being caught in the pool’s drain. Fortunately, she was rescued by David Hasselhoff, who worked as an on-set lifeguard at the time.

Reunions and Enduring Influence

Since the show concluded, there have been numerous reunions and adaptations, such as “The Brady Bunch Hour,” “A Very Brady Christmas,” and “The Brady Bunch Movie.” The show’s unforgettable theme song and beloved characters continue to resonate globally.
