The Tragic Loss of L’Wren Scott
L’Wren Scott’s death occurred while the Rolling Stones were touring Australia in 2014. The tour was immediately put on hold, with Jagger returning to New York, where he had been residing with Scott, a successful model and fashion designer.
Following the confirmation of Scott’s death, Jagger released a heartfelt message on his website, a rare public display of his personal emotions. “I’m still struggling to understand how my love and best friend could end her life in such a tragic way. We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves,” he wrote.
Describing her, he noted, “She had great presence and her talent was much admired.”
However, there were initial reports suggesting that the couple had separated shortly before Scott took her own life, referring to her as Jagger’s “ex-lover.” Jagger’s representative subsequently clarified these rumors, confirming that they had been together at the time of her passing.
What Happened to L’Wren Scott?
On the morning of her death in 2014, Scott had requested her assistant, Brittany Penebre, to meet her at her West 24th Street and 11th Avenue duplex in New York. Upon arrival, Penebre tragically discovered Scott hanging from a door handle in the apartment, a law enforcement source described it as a “painless” manner of death.
While Scott did not leave a suicide note, the involvement of drugs or foul play was conclusively ruled out. New York City’s chief medical examiner’s office spokesperson, Julie Bolcer, later confirmed that Scott’s cause of death was indeed suicide.
In the time leading up to her death, Scott’s London-based fashion company, LS Fashion Ltd., was revealed to be heavily in debt. The business had a deficit of $5.9 million in 2012, which had risen from a $4.2 million deficit the previous year.
Her death followed the sudden cancellation of her London Fashion Week show due to alleged “production difficulties in the major show and couture pieces.” However, an insider later suggested that the underlying reason for the postponement was her business’s failing financial situation.
