Former First Lady Michelle Obama was notably absent from the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100. While all other living former presidents and their spouses attended, Michelle’s absence was attributed to “scheduling conflicts” during an “extended vacation” in Hawaii.
Her spokesperson, Crystal Carson, confirmed her nonattendance, stating, “Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family and all who admired this remarkable leader.” CNN journalist Jeff Zeleney noted Michelle was “still in Hawaii” at the time of the funeral.
During the service, footage captured Barack Obama seated beside President-elect Donald Trump, with the two sharing a lighthearted moment. In a tribute following Carter’s passing, Barack praised the late president’s dedication to justice and service, writing, “He taught us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, and service. Michelle and I send our prayers to the Carter family.”
Trump also shared his condolences, acknowledging philosophical differences but lauding Carter’s commitment to America. “He worked hard to make our country better,” Trump said. Both leaders emphasized Carter’s legacy of resilience and compassion.
