Over his almost 50-year career, Liam Neeson has portrayed a diverse range of characters—from a Jedi Master to a vengeful father in the Taken franchise, a role that transformed him into an iconic action star. Recently, the 72-year-old actor, who now questions his ability to convincingly throw a punch, revealed that he’s considering retiring from action films, saying, “It has to stop at some stage.”
Neeson’s career breakthrough came in the early 1990s with his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List, earning global recognition and multiple award nominations. Over the next decade, he appeared in a variety of roles, from romantic leads to a Jedi Master in Star Wars.
At age 56, Neeson redefined his career with Taken (2008). His gruff portrayal of Bryan Mills, a relentless father with a “particular set of skills,” resonated with audiences, making him an unlikely but hugely effective action hero. The film’s success spawned two sequels and solidified his status as a late-career action star.
Despite his continued success, Neeson remains realistic about the physical demands of action films. “I’m 72; it has to stop at some stage,” he shared. Yet, he credits his long-time stunt coordinator Mark Vanselow for ensuring he performs many of his own stunts while prioritizing safety.
Looking ahead, Neeson is exploring comedy, starring as Frank Drebin in a reboot of The Naked Gun, set for a 2025 release. Though uncertain about his comedic chops, co-star Pamela Anderson praises his humor, saying, “It was hard to keep a straight face in scenes together.”
