In a striking political development, New York State Senator Liz Krueger (D-28) has proposed that four northeastern U.S. states—New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut—consider seceding to join Canada in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House following his November 5 election victory.
Krueger, a longtime advocate of this idea, has also suggested withholding over $300 billion in federal taxes as a form of resistance. In a discussion with Politico, she defended these proposals, emphasizing the need for alternative strategies to counter Trump’s leadership.
The secession conversation began in September 2024 when Krueger told City and State New York that residents of these states share political and cultural similarities with Canadians. She suggested forming a new Canadian province, arguing, “Why should I have to leave this country? If Trump is re-elected, it’s not the fault of New Yorkers.”
Krueger also noted informal positive feedback from Ottawa and pointed out that border shifts are historically common in Europe. She remains firm in her belief that unconventional approaches, including financial leverage, could be key to resisting Trump’s policies.
