I knew my fiancé loved me before he skipped our wedding. A day later, I saw him signing documents in my father’s office.
On our sixth anniversary, Brian seemed nervous. “What’s wrong?” I asked. He smiled weakly. Suddenly, violinists played as he knelt. “Jane, will you marry me?”

The next day, my father disapproved. “Can he afford a home? Private school for kids?” I defended Brian, but Dad scoffed. “Return the ring. I know wealthier men for you.”

“I’ll give you the money,” Dad said. “If you leave Jane forever.”
