Christina Applegate, best known for her roles in Married… with Children and Dead to Me, revealed in 2021 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease affecting the central nervous system. Though her diagnosis came that year, Applegate later admitted she had ignored small symptoms for about seven years.
In a Good Morning America interview, she recalled her first signs of MS. “I noticed, especially during the first season of Dead to Me, my leg would buckle. I just thought I was tired, dehydrated, or it was the weather.” For months, the symptoms would vanish, only to return more aggressively.
By early 2021, her toes began tingling. During that summer’s filming, Applegate had to use a wheelchair to reach the set. She admitted to enduring “excruciating pain” but pushed through, feeling a duty to finish the show’s final season.
Applegate shared how acting helped her cope with grief and trauma, calling her work on Dead to Me “cathartic.” Her strength and perseverance in the face of such adversity is truly inspiring.
