A neglected dog covered in matted fur has been given a new lease on life, thanks to the South Plains SPCA. On July 16, they shared that they had rescued a 6-year-old dog in the “worst case of dog neglect” they had ever seen. His fur was so severely matted that it had grown into his skin, and his nails were two inches long.

“His hair growth was about five years of matting,” said Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA. The dog, aptly named Matt, was in terrible pain. Every attempt to cut his hair made him yelp, so they had to sedate him. They shaved off three pounds of fur, discovering bruises, embedded stickers, and even beetles.

After his grooming, Matt looked like a brand-new dog. “He is the most gorgeous-looking dog I’ve ever seen,” Moyers told People. Now in foster care, Matt is experiencing the joys of a normal life, including his first walk in years. Once he fully recovers, Matt will be up for adoption, ready for a loving forever home.
