Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, his wife and their dog found dead in their New Mexico home

Gene Hackman, the esteemed 95-year-old Oscar-winning actor, and his 65-year-old wife, Betsy Arakawa, a classically trained pianist, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. A maintenance worker discovered their bodies after noticing the front door ajar. Hackman was found in the mudroom, and Arakawa in the bathroom, both showing signs of advanced decomposition, suggesting they had been deceased for several days.
Authorities observed no signs of foul play, forced entry, or carbon monoxide poisoning. However, an open bottle of prescription pills and scattered medication were found near Arakawa’s body. A deceased German Shepherd was also discovered nearby. Autopsies revealed no external trauma, and data from Hackman’s pacemaker indicated he likely passed away on February 17.

The couple’s sudden deaths have left the Santa Fe community in shock. Neighbors described them as a close-knit pair, deeply involved in local arts and businesses. Their absence is profoundly felt among friends and residents.
