Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, passed away Tuesday night after a medical emergency following President Trump’s speech to Congress. Turner, 70, had battled bone cancer in the past and had recently become president. Lawmakers reported that House Minority Whip Katherine Clark informed them of his death. Turner was seen in the Capitol earlier that day, appearing to have a medical emergency. Capitol Police responded, but Turner later died. Prior to his death, Turner had served as Houston’s mayor from 2016 to 2024 and as a state lawmaker for over 25 years. He had recently run for Congress after the death of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas. Turner was selected by local Democratic leaders to replace Jackson Lee on the ballot.
Meanwhile, President Trump’s speech to Congress received overwhelming approval. A CBS News/YouGov poll showed 76% of viewers approved of his remarks, with 68% describing it as “hopeful” and “presidential.” The speech’s focus on issues like inflation, immigration, and border security resonated with many Americans. Trump’s speech even earned praise from both Republicans and media figures.
