We had anticipated this day to be the most joyous of our lives. I was finally prepared to marry the woman I loved; the wedding was about to take place in exactly one week. After months of preparation, everything had finally clicked. Someone who understood me like no one else had, and who restored my faith in love, had finally found me.
Afterwards, I got the photo.

The message was from a bridesmaid I barely knew—my fiancée—and it caught me off guard. She had always appeared courteous, perhaps a little distant, but nothing out of the norm, and our interactions had been limited to a handful of occasions. I distinctly recall checking my texts on my phone and seeing her name appear. Until I opened the image, I didn’t give it much thought, even though it was strange.
The Momentary Image That Shifted Everything
At first look, the picture didn’t seem complicated. Standing before a mirror, the bridesmaid wore a breathtaking black gown that accentuated her shape to perfection. It wasn’t just her, though, that piqued my interest. Standing by her side, decked out in her wedding gown, my fiancée could be seen gazing into the mirror at the bridesmaid.
My fiancée’s expression gave me the willies. It was a strange sort of admiration, unlike what one would expect from a friend. Something profound was there, an intensity I couldn’t quite identify. My thoughts were racing as I attempted to decipher what I was witnessing.
