In an effort to curb illegal immigration, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed an executive order focused on eliminating federal benefits for those residing in the country without legal permission.

The executive order aims to stop taxpayer funds from aiding those living in the U.S. unlawfully, though specifics on benefits affected are unclear. Typically, unauthorized immigrants don’t receive federal benefits, except for emergency medical services. It references a 1996 welfare reform law limiting benefits for unauthorized immigrants, which has weakened over time. The order targets policies under Biden, who expanded parole programs allowing over a million individuals temporary U.S. entry. It also seeks to prevent federal funds from supporting sanctuary policies or illegal immigration. Additionally, a review of government regulations could alter policies not aligning with the administration’s goals.
