Melissa, still grieving the loss of her husband Mark, attends a birthday party for Kara, her mother-in-law, who has excluded her from most family events since Mark’s death. At the party, Kara treats Melissa coldly, making veiled insults throughout the evening. When Kara introduces a potential new daughter-in-law, Melissa confronts her, leading Kara to angrily kick her out of the party.
Later, Melissa receives a call from her niece, Emma, who reveals that Kara is hiding something: Mark’s grandmother, Eleanor, left her business to Melissa, not Kara, and Kara is planning to falsify documents to steal the inheritance. Melissa contacts her lawyer, David, and returns to the party with him. They confront Kara and her lawyer, forcing the truth to come out. Kara’s plans to commit fraud are exposed, and she is left humiliated.
