Rita Carrey, the sister of legendary actor and comedian Jim Carrey, has died at the age of 68, just over a year after her wedding.
Her husband Alex broke the tragic news via Rita’s Facebook page, noting that she passed away on November 14 “surrounded by family and friends.”
“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I announce that Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14, 2024, surrounded by family and friends,” he wrote, adding that the couple spent 16 years together before marrying in a public ceremony last July.
“We traveled the world and met many people we consider friends. Rita was my best friend, my love and my beautiful wife,” Alex continued.
“Rita had a loving soul, she always wanted to help everyone, even complete strangers. As everyone knows, Christmas was Rita’s favorite holiday, in fact it was every day for her, and she started a fundraiser for a local charity.”
Rita was one of Jim Carrey’s older sisters. The actor also has a brother named John and another sister named Patricia. All four were born and raised in Canada.
In a 2015 interview on SiriusXM 167, Rita talked about what it was like to be the sister of one of the most popular actors in the world.
“It’s not difficult,” she said.
“But for the last 25 years, I’ve been asked about Jim every day. Every day, someone will say, ‘Are you Jim Carrey’s sister?’ or ‘You look like someone I know.’ It doesn’t bother me.”
At the time of writing, Jim Carrey has yet to make an official statement about his sister’s death.
