A decade ago, I lost my job and family due to my lack of self-worth. Once ambitious, I dreamed of running my own business, but after my repair shop failed, I spiraled. I worked as a waiter, unable to provide stability for my family. My marriage with Rebecca ended, and soon, I was alone. Losing everything was a wake-up call. Now, I have a chance to redeem myself with my estranged daughter.

I spent the last of my money on a birthday gift for Harriet—a small bunny rabbit. Along with it, I wrote a note: “I miss you so much. Happy Birthday. Love, Daddy.”

When I arrived at Eric’s house, I realized just how wealthy he was. He had thrown Harriet a grand party, complete with mascots and a jumping castle. My heart sank. My daughter had a new dad—one who could give her everything I couldn’t.

I felt utterly ashamed. Unable to face them, I left the gift at their front gate and walked away. I was in a dark place, lost and hopeless. With no future in sight, I decided to leave the coast and start over elsewhere. The only thing I owned was the house my father, Frank, had left me.

Desperate for money, I sold the house and moved into a small apartment in another state.
