Hereditary diseases, like epidermolysis bullosa (EB), cause the skin to blister at the slightest touch. EB is rare, with only 8.2 cases per million live births in the U.S. Some people with milder forms don’t experience symptoms until they start crawling or walking. For Guilherme, even the gentlest touch causes painful blisters, making everyday activities a constant challenge.

Despite these difficulties, Guilherme’s courage and joyful spirit have inspired those around him. His parents feared the worst when he was placed in a coma for 16 days while doctors fought to save him. His mother, Tayane Granda Orrinco, never left his side, praying for a miracle. Doctors recommended a tracheostomy, but Tayane believed her son could pull through without it.
One day, while Tayane was taking a break, she received the call she feared but hoped for—Guilherme had woken up. His first words were, “I want to hug my mom.” Their emotional reunion went viral, touching hearts worldwide and raising awareness of EB.
Today, Guilherme’s unbroken spirit continues to inspire, despite ongoing surgeries and hospitalizations.
