Scarlett Johansson has addressed why she doesn’t feel comfortable taking photographs with fans who see her in public.

Johansson, well recognized for her portrayal as  Black Widow in  the Avengers flicks, may be considered one of the world’s most identifiable performers.

If you see the 40-year-old out and about, don’t expect to take a photo with her. This is unlikely to happen unless you reside in New York or Los Angeles.

So, why doesn’t ScarJo want to pose for photographs every time a Marvel fan runs into her while grocery shopping or eating out? Isn’t this simply part of being a celebrity?

No, it isn’t, and the Lost in Translation star has a legitimate reason for her reluctance to be your go-to photo prop.

While promoting her forthcoming film Jurassic World Rebirth, Johansson told InStyle that she does not want to be ‘defined’ by a specific location or period.

“It really offends a lot of people,” she added.

“It doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the fact that people are fans or delighted to see me.

But I constantly tell them, ‘I’m not working.’” [That is,] I do not want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. “I am doing my own thing.”

This is understandable, given that celebrities, despite their high stature, are still individuals, not zoo animals for us to admire.

The actress also stated that keeping her two children, a 10-year-old daughter with Romain Dauriac and a three-year-old boy with Colin Jost, anonymous was essential to her.

“I think preserving that anonymity for as long as possible until it’s someone’s choice— that’s the choice I make as far as my kids go,” according to her.

Johansson isn’t the only star who has set clear boundaries for fan interactions.

Last year, singer Chappell Roan went viral after revealing that she considered fans who asked for photos in public “entitled.”

She said in a TikTok post, “I don’t care if you think it’s selfish of me to say no for a photo, for your time, or a hug—that’s not normal, that’s weird.”

Justin Bieber has similarly compared the experience to being a ‘zoo animal,’ while celebrities Chris Pratt and Jim Carrey both stated that they preferred non-photo encounters.
