My house was peaceful before my husband’s best friend, Alex, moved in during his home renovations. Jake invited him without asking me. I was upset, but he apologized sweetly, so I relented. That was my mistake.
The house quickly became chaotic. Alex’s room reeked, filled with trash and dirty laundry. Jake and Alex stayed up late gaming and drinking, while I struggled to sleep and clean. I felt invisible—unheard, overwhelmed, and completely alone in my own home.
Moreover, I was growing lonely. I discovered the kitchen in disarray one night after a long day at work. The counter had crumbs, the sink had dirty dishes, and the floor had a strange sticky material.
My patience ran out! “This has to STOP!” I said to myself with gritted teeth and fists. I confronted Alex alone with my husband. However, he and his pal were inseparable, making Jake hard to get.
When I saw my spouse alone, I confronted him. “Jake, can we talk?” I called from the doorway of his home office, where he was working while Alex played another video game in the living room.
Jake dismissed my plea for help, calling me negative. So, I dumped all the trash from the house into his office—his sacred workspace. He was furious, but I reminded him, “Just one room, right?” That woke him up. When the mess returned, I left for the weekend. Jake cracked. By Monday, he begged me to come back—and this time, the house was clean, and Alex was gone. Lesson learned.
