Blind Student Fired After Feeding Stray Cats Says She Has “No Regrets”
Kaylee Muthart, a South Carolina woman who went viral in 2018 after gouging out her own eyes during a meth-induced psychotic episode, says she has “no regrets” after recently being fired from her dishwashing job.
At just 20, Kaylee believed the world would end unless she sacrificed her sight. “Someone had to give something up to save everyone — and that someone was me,” she said. She pulled out both eyes with her fingers in front of a church, leaving herself permanently blind.
Now 26 and sober, Kaylee had been working at a restaurant while finishing her education. However, she was fired after repeatedly taking leftover food to feed a stray cat and her kittens, despite warnings. “I gave my meal to the cat — I couldn’t walk away knowing she was hungry,” she told The Mirror.
Despite losing her job, Kaylee remains hopeful. “I live in peace knowing I followed my heart.”
She now wears prosthetic eyes and admits the adjustment is hard, but says, “I’d rather be blind than addicted. I’m happier now than I ever was before.”
