Chaos at Berlin Zoo: Woman Jumps Into Polar Bear Enclosure
A day at the Berlin Zoo turned into a terrifying ordeal in spring 2009 when visitors witnessed a woman leap into the polar bear enclosure during feeding time. As keepers tossed meat to the bears, 32-year-old Mandy K. suddenly scaled a wall and jumped into the icy moat, swimming straight toward the massive predators.
One bear quickly noticed and attacked. Horrified families watched as zookeepers threw life rings and meat to distract the animals. The woman struggled to reach safety, slipping multiple times as bears began closing in. One bear grabbed her, pulling her under repeatedly. Eventually, staff managed to haul her out using a life ring.
Mandy, who suffered serious injuries to her arms, hips, and legs, survived the ordeal and was rushed to the hospital. Authorities later revealed she was dealing with personal hardships — job loss, debt, and a recent breakup.
Zoo officials confirmed no changes to the enclosure would be made, insisting barriers can’t stop determined intruders. This wasn’t the first time—just a year earlier, a man entered the same enclosure with celebrity bear Knut.
Zookeepers said, “The bears acted on instinct. She chose to jump.”
