When Robert Hoge was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1972, he didn’t look like any other baby. He had a massive tumor on his face and severely deformed legs, which doctors later amputated. His mother, overwhelmed by shock, initially refused to take him home. She even admitted wishing he hadn’t survived.

But Robert’s story didn’t end in heartbreak—it began there.
His mother, wrestling with guilt and fear, slowly came to accept her son. After a family meeting and support from his four siblings, Robert was welcomed home. He underwent numerous surgeries, including facial reconstruction and prosthetics for his legs.
As a child, Robert read from his mother’s diary—raw, honest reflections that helped him understand her initial reaction. Over time, he forgave her, choosing to see their relationship as a film with a sad beginning but a beautiful ending.
Now a proud husband, father, author, and motivational speaker, Robert embraces the word “ugly” not as an insult but as a story of resilience, identity, and self-love. He reminds the world: beauty isn’t skin-deep—it’s soul-strong.

Robert has refused to have additional operations that could “improve” his appearance.

He is happy with himself just as he is. And that’s something we can all learn from.

Please share Robert’s incredible story to help others learn to accept who they are!
