The mother of 8-year-old Joshua Dunbar, who tragically died at his birthday party, is urgently warning parents to avoid helium balloons—the common decoration that caused her son’s death. Joshua, full of life and dreams, had just celebrated his birthday surrounded by laughter and balloons. But hours later, he was found unresponsive in his room with a large helium balloon over his head.
Despite desperate efforts, Joshua could not be saved. The coroner confirmed his death was due to asphyxia caused by helium displacing the oxygen he needed to breathe. Though helium is non-toxic, it can suffocate by preventing oxygen intake.
Joshua’s mother, Carly, described the trauma as “one of the most tragic accidents.” Grieving deeply, she pleaded on social media for parents to “stick with air-filled balloons” and avoid helium balloons entirely.
Her message is clear: the heartbreak of losing a child is unbearable, and if her story prevents even one death, it will be worth it. She urges families to rethink party decorations and prioritize safety over fleeting aesthetics.
