8-Year-Old Dies from Birthday Balloon Accident; Heartbroken Mom Issues Urgent Warning
A joyful birthday turned into a devastating tragedy when 8-year-old Joshua Dunbar died after suffocating on a helium balloon during his celebration. The large number-shaped balloon had accidentally blocked his breathing, and despite paramedics’ efforts, he could not be revived.
“It was absolutely traumatic,” his mother Carly shared in an emotional interview. “You hear the screams, the sirens, then the doctor saying, ‘We’re really sorry.’” She recalled holding Joshua’s hands in his final moments, telling him, “If your angel wings are there, take them.”
An inquest confirmed Joshua died from asphyxia involving helium. Though helium is non-toxic, it displaces oxygen. When inhaled or when a balloon covers the face, it can quickly lead to suffocation. The coroner noted Joshua may have been innocently playing or mimicking a funny voice when the accident happened.
Carly has since taken to social media to warn other parents: “Please, do not buy your children helium balloons. I hate myself every day for buying the balloon that took our boy.” She now advocates for using air-filled decorations instead. “They look just as nice,” she says, “and they won’t cost a child their life.
